Right now, Missouri legislators are mulling over a new bill that might help homeowners and renters coping with the aftermath of damage from bad weather. The new legislation, which was put forward in a special legislative session, seeks to permit tax deductions to home insurance deductibles paid for repairing damages caused by storm.

This proposal is a part of a big framework for the special session which also deals with disaster housing grants, affordable housing, and measures aimed at retaining professional sports teams in the state. Governor Mike Kehoe started the session on May 30 after months of tornadic activity, hail, flooding, and other severe weather conditions affecting the state.

“This is a clarion call for legislators: take this special session as a chance to help facilitate state investments that protect the most vulnerable among us, foster economic growth, and provide people with the help they need,” Kehoe said in a statement. “There’s a tendency to shelve work; in this case, that shouldn’t be.”

The new bill would enable homeowners and renters to deduct tax in relation to the deductible they pay for damages caused by severe weather.
