Nationwide traffic law-breaking jumped 17% in the past year, outpacing 2019 figures.

Much of the surge stems from major speeding offenses, which swelled by 16%, and minor ones, up 25%. Alarming still, tickets for distracted driving soared 50% between 2023 and 2024.

Cases of driving under the influence climbed 8% overall; drivers aged 66 to 90 showed the steepest rise, yet the bulk of DUIs still belongs to the 26-to-35 group.

Danger on the road has not yet pushed insurance markets into crisis; quite the reverse.

After 2023s rates jumped 15%, the average premium rise eased to 10% in 2024. That, together with a 13.6% leap in direct written premiums to $359 billion, has boosted carrier profits and steadied loss ratios. Some firms now chase growth and file for lower rates, the report says.

Insurers enjoy this calm while shoppers flood the market; by the end of 2024, more than 45% of active policies had been compared at least once.
