A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine, Jon, shared a story with me.

Her father passed away during her college years unexpectedly. It’s one of those phases in life that hits you out of nowhere and blindsides you. In her anguish, she realized that she was sitting as a kitchen table with bills, a mortgage, and student loans contending for her attention. Her mother was merely keeping herself together.

But underneath a favorite baseball cap, there was a life insurance policy .

Not complicated or flashy. Just straight to the point.

Sufficient to cover all the expenses linked to the house rent, her remaining two years of school, and groceries for her mother while she grieved.

To Jon, that was the last gift her father gave them.

What Makes This So Difficult to Talk About?

Let’s face it, life insurance can be pretty dull. A topic we don’t bring up during brunch or post on social media, but perhaps we should discuss it more because in reality, applying for one is about providing for your dependents when you won’t be there to do it personally.

It’s not to spread fear.

It’s more heartfelt than that.

It is about parting from everything other than recollections. It’s regarding letting go of one’s foundation. Protection. Self-respect. A split second of tranquility amidst disorder.

Envision This…

You no longer exist, but because of a policy you enacted, your spouse does not have to sell the house, your kids get to pursue their dreams, and your parents don’t need to fall into debt for your funeral.

This is what life insurance achieves.

It isn’t about death; rather, it is about preserving the lives of those who love you the most.

The Truth Most People Are Unaware Of

Life insurance is not limited to only the wealthy.

You don’t need to be married or have children. All you need is for someone out there to care for you enough to ask, “What will happen to them if I was gone?”

If you are even thinking that way, the simplest approach is to act on it. Consider the fact that term life insurance, which is the most favorable option for most people, can be obtained for sub a price of coffee. It is cheaper the earlier it is purchased.

The Legacy You Leave Behind

One day someone you cherish will recount your story, what’s perhaps outrageous is the thought of who it may be—a friend, your partner, your kid.

And in that narrative, you will be the individual who not only lived with heart but who also strategized with heart. Who made a hard decision now, so they wouldn’t have to contend with far more difficult decisions down the line.
